St. James the Apostle Anglican Church is an open and inclusive community, worshipping in Quebec’s beautiful Eastern Townships.<\/p>\n

This parish was founded in 1829, and is the oldest still-worshipping Christian community in our village.<\/p>\n

St. James the Apostle is located at the heart of one of the most iconic villages of Quebec’s Eastern Townships, Stanbridge East<\/a>. It is also located on the wine route and in one of the riches agricultural zones in our country. There are many interesting nearby places to visit when you come to St. James the Apostle.<\/p>\n

Whether you are a lifelong Christian, a visitor to the Eastern Townships, or exploring your faith, all are welcome at St. James the Apostle.\u00a0 We hope to see you soon!<\/p>\n

Prior to the construction of any church, the Rev. James Reid of St. Armand East (Frelighsburg) conducted the first Anglican services in Stanbridge East in an old brick schoolhouse building (built in 1820, and which still exists as a private residence at 13 rue Maple).<\/p>\n

Land was deeded by Robert Burleigh and James Scagel for the building of a church proper in 1829, and construction began a year later. \u00a0The name of St. James was chosen as a compliment to the then-priest, James Reid. \u00a0The original church was built of brick with a tower at the north end. \u00a0The costs required for construction were raised through the sale of church pews (that is, the purchase of where a family could sit for worship).<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the new church quickly fell into disrepair. \u00a0In 1849 Reid noted in his journal that \u201cthe foundation of the church is giving way to the manifest danger of the edifice\u2026if it is not repaired this fall, it will come down with a crash next spring.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 1851, the Rev. Isaac Constantine became the first resident priest of the parish. \u00a0He was regarded to be a person of high education, musical and poetic talent, and above all great determination. \u00a0In 1861, Constantine began working towards the construction of a new church building, removing the pews to an adjacent shed where Sunday services could continue in the meantime.<\/p>\n

The present church was completed in 1878, and is reminiscent of many church buildings found across rural England. \u00a0Upon completion of the church, Constantine described the building as being \u201cindeed, a very fine specimen of a village church.\u201d \u00a0Bishop James Fulford also called the church \u201cthe best I have seen in this country, outside of the cities.”<\/p>\n

The red brick building is an architectural gem amongst Anglican churches in the Eastern Townships \u2014 and the rest of Quebec. \u00a0It is built in the carpenter gothic style: identifying features of this style include steeply pitched roofs and gables, gingerbread ornamentation, and strong vertical design elements, all of which can be seen on St. James the Apostle Church. \u00a0The church is in the shape of a cross (cruciform), with a central tower.<\/p>\n

Fr. Tyson Rosberg, Priest-In-Charge<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I was born on Canada\u2019s west coast, but have been living in Quebec for ten years, four of which have been out in the beautiful Eastern Townships.\u00a0 I obtained an undergraduate degree in history at the University of Victoria, before pursuing graduate studies in both history and theology at Concordia and McGill Universities in Montreal.\u00a0 I am passionate about all things rural, and also hold a certificate in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security from Bishops University.\u00a0 Outside of the church, I love to work outside in my garden, go cross-country skiing, and hike in the amazing scenes of the Towsnhips with my labrador retriver Roxie.<\/p>\n

I moved out to the Eastern Townships from Montreal with my partner eight years ago.\u00a0 While worshiping in the Eastern Townships communities, I discerned a call to greater involvement in the leadership of the Church in this region.\u00a0 With much love, guidance, and prayer, I was Ordained a vocational (permanent) deacon in September 2022.\u00a0 I live in Austin, but serve as a deacon throughout the many churches of this region.\u00a0 Deacons are agents of the Church out in the world, visiting the sick and lonely, those in hospital, and all in need.\u00a0 I am honored and grateful that God allows me to serve and share my ministry in this beautiful place we call home!<\/p>\n

Vestry<\/span><\/h3>\n

Originally the word \u201cvestry\u201d referred to the room where priests would put on their vestments prior to worship, at which time people might meet with them to discuss the affairs of the parish.\u00a0 Today, <\/span><\/span>the Vestry is the governing board of the parish.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
